These programs are led by artists, historians, storytellers, health and wellness specialists, botanists, and scientists; experts in their field who share their knowledge and skills with our community. 20TH ANNUAL ART OF QUILTING QUILT SHOW
HD SOUTH, Home of the Gilbert Historical Museum, invites you to the 20th Annual “Art of Quilting” Show with a special theme of “Then and Now”. The “Art of Quilting” show will run from February 25 to May 26, 2025. Show admission is included in the price of museum admission.
GILBERT SPORTS
Sports have a remarkable ability to bring people together. Whether we're cheering for our favorite teams, participating in community leagues, or watching international competitions, sports help us forge strong relationships and foster a sense of unity. From February 11-April 21, we will showcase some of Gilbert's sports history, including Gilbert’s 1923 basketball team the Yellowjackets, and the 1927 Gilbert High School basketball team that traveled all the way to Chicago to compete in the Interscholastic Basketball Tournament!
22nd ANNUAL GVAL FINE ART SHOW AND SALE
HD SOUTH invites you to the 22nd Annual GVAL Fine Art Show and Sale. Art for the show is selected by a professional juror and the show judge selects the winners and Best in Show. A selection of submitted pieces will be available for viewing in Gallery 4. All pieces can be viewed online at www.gval.org . The show will include over 80 pieces of assorted works-- painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture. The show opens March 29 and runs until May 3, 2025. HD SOUTH partners with GVAL, which is a non-profit group that offers a venue for local artists to show their work. Admission to Gallery 4 is included in the price of museum admission.

ARIZONA’S WORLD WAR II AIRFIELDS
April 1, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:00pm Join local historian extraordinaire Steve Hoza, who has worked in the museum field for the past 35 years as he shares his knowledge of Arizona’s war airfields. Arizona was home to 59 military airfields during World War II, training tens of thousands of pilots, bombardiers, and gunners. Steve has visited each of these fields and presents information on the fields and how they were used. Artifacts from the trainings will also be on display. Registration is required. Cost: FREE
ADVENTURES IN ART WITH GVAL
April 5, 2025 | 10:00am – 12:00pm Join HD SOUTH and the Gilbert Visual Arts League for this fun and interactive art workshop. Pam Hendricks, a member of the Gilbert Visual Arts League (GVAL) will lead participants through a workshop teaching new artistic techniques. All supplies provided. Registration is required. See the calendar for this month’s art project. Cost: Members: FREE; Non-members $5.
STEM SATURDAY
April 5, 2025 | 1:00pm – 2:30pm Have fun at the museum on Saturday afternoons with AP teacher Karen Maas, from the Gilbert Classical Academy and her STEM students as they share a STEM learning experience with participants. GCA students will introduce a variety of activities including 3D printing with both 3D pens and printers, CAD applications using Tinkercad, Makey Makey apps with fruit, and more! Age 6 years and up. Registration is required. Registration will close at 12pm on Friday. Cost: FREE
YOGA AT HD SOUTH
April 7, 2025 | 7:00pm – 8:00pm Join HD SOUTH and Yoga’s Arc, Amilia Lucie and Alyssa Schaeffer, for an hour of yoga that will help relax participants while conditioning muscles. Enjoy the benefits of effective breathing, improved flexibility, and greater balance. This is an all-level yoga class for teens through adults. Please bring a yoga mat, water, and wear comfortable clothing. Registration is required. Cost: FREE
CREATIVE GROWTH WORKSHOP
April 8, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:00pm Local author/illustrator Jenifer Tull-Gauger, will lead this workshop which will inspire writers, artists, crafters, and creators of all kinds. The topics covered will include sources of inspiration, the art of title and headline creation, illustration, and more! If you have an idea/inspiration notebook of your own, please bring it. If you do not have one, one will be provided. Age 12 years and up. Registration is required. Cost: FREE
SETTING BOUNDARIES
April 10, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:00pm This workshop will raise awareness of increasing interpersonal effectiveness through understanding how to establish good boundaries with others. Focus will be given on how to enforce boundaries with consistency and compassion, so others will learn how to respect them. Facilitated by Paul Gibson, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 20 years of experience, is also the clinical director of reVibe Mental Health. Paul embraces the values of authenticity, compassion, and humor as he works to connect with people to help them find the place where they would like to be. Age 16 and up. Registration is required. MAKE AND PLAY
April 12, 2025 | 1:00pm – 2:30pm Play musical instruments from around the world with ASU Emeritus professors Daune and Maureen Roen, in this fun interactive musical workshop. Learn how to make and play simple percussion instruments from items found around the home. The workshop will end with a brief concert performance alongside Duane and Maureen. Supplies provided. Age 6 years and up. Registration required. Cost: FREE
FAMILY HISTORY-THIS IS WHO I AM!
April 15, 2025 | 6:30 – 8:00pm Join ASU professor emeritus Duane Roen, founding coordinator for the Project for Writing and Recording Family History in the College of Integrative Science and Arts, for a unique family history workshop. We will discuss questions that will help others know who we are and what we want them to know about us. Then we will take some time to write and share what we have written. Age 12 years and up. Registration required. Cost: FREE
SPRING HOLIDAY COOKIE DECORATING WITH MAE’S COOKIE JAR
April 19, 2025 | 1:00pm – 3:00pm Whether you come on your own or with friends, you will have a great time decorating delicious, Spring-Easter themed sugar cookie sets. Guided by Vickie from Mae’s Cookie Jar, you will learn a variety of techniques including holding your icing bag, outlining, flooding, applying transfers and wet on wet. SOUND MEDITATION FOR GRIEF
April 22, 2025 | 6:30pm – 7:30pm Join Stuart Preston, a certified Sound Practitioner, for a deeply empathetic Sound Meditation session designed for those grappling with deep grief and loss. Bring a yoga mat, blankets, and a pillow to create your own personal sanctuary. Dress comfortability and arrive 10 minutes early. Age 16 years and up. Registration is required. Space limited. Cost: $5 per person.
PARTY IN THE STARS-***PROGRAM FULL
April 23, 2025 | 7:30pm – 8:30pm The East Valley Astronomy Club (EVAC) is a group of more than 100 astronomy enthusiasts which began in 1987 and includes members from all over the Valley. Join EVAC and HD SOUTH for a Star Party where attendees will learn about the cosmos and be able to view celestial bodies in our galaxy! This event takes place at the Observatory at the Riparian Preserve. Registration is required. Cost: FREE ~donations for EVAC are accepted at the observatory~
FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH
April 24, 2025 | 6:30pm to 8:00pm Join professional genealogist Melissa Lopez of Ancestor Reunions and learn how to navigate FamilySearch.org and the value of using census records. Census records provide an excellent way to learn more about your ancestors. A wealth of information can be gleaned by analyzing census records at FamilySearch to build up your ancestral tree. Registration is required. Cost: FREE
LIVING BEHIND A CHINESE LAUNDRY
April 26, 2025 | 11:00am – 12:30pm Gilbert resident and U.S. Navy veteran Lucy Wong, was born in Los Angeles and grew up behind her parent’s Chinese laundry in Los Angeles County. Lucy will share personal accounts of her family’s experiences working in an environment that is a unique and often untold part of American history. She will recount their achievements, struggles, racial prejudices, and social and cultural isolations. Registration is required. Cost: FREE
